Intro to coloured clay

In this hands-on one day workshop, participants will learn how to colour clay using ceramic stains, blend hues, and apply simple colour theory to create their own unique palettes.

You’ll explore bold and subtle pattern-making through nerikomi techniques and use coloured porcelain to hand-build a refined cylinder vase.

About Larissa Warren

The workshop is led by ceramic artist Larissa Warren, who has worked with coloured clay for 13 years and is nationally recognised for her exhibitions, publications and presentations. In 2024, HOTA: Home of the Arts acquired a major body of her work comprising 23 vessels; she was a featured artist in Nerikomi by Thomas Hoadley (2023) and winner of the Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence (2018).

What to bring and what is included?

The workshop includes morning and afternoon tea along with clay and coloured stains. We will have all other equipment needed.

Participants need to bring 1 x worn, soft cotton (eg an old pillowcase) and 2 x 40cm x 40cm squares of cotton. Lunch and firing are not included (we have a fridge and microwave in the studio and there are take away restaurants at the nearby Benowa Gardens shopping centre).

Larissa will gift each participant a clay cutter.

Please arrive at 9:45am ready for a 10am start.
