About Us
Our Story
The Gold Coast Potters Association was established by local crafts people in 1976.
In 1977, the Gold Coast City Council recognised the value of their endeavours and provided the derelict Benowa Primary School building for their use. Enthusiastic volunteers soon had their creative space fitted out. Much of the equipment was make-do and home-made and one of the kilns, still in use today, was built by the founding President – Tom Wardell.
Classes for both adults and children were soon filled with excited participants and community interest continued to grow. In 1987, the Association was formally incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation and in 1990 the Albert Shire Council offered further support by renovating an old unused building for a second studio in Mudgeeraba which is shared with the Society of Sculptors.
In 1992, the Gold Coast City Council moved the original Benowa Post Office building (“Post Office Gallery”) to the Potters’ Benowa location and the area was developed as a heritage precinct due to its historical significance. The Post Office Gallery was renovated in cooperation with students from TAFE College.
Following many years of planning, in 1997 the Gold Coast City Council provided a new studio to be shared by both the Gold Coast Potters Association and Society of Sculptors. Volunteers were once again hard at work with two small galleries operating in the precinct. Today, the Post Office Gallery continues to display and sell our artists’ work and is open to the public every Saturday along with special event days.
The Association has formed an impressive collection of local work with pieces from the earliest local potters to those who are currently producing work of merit. Many former students of the Association are nationally recognised with established reputations in the arts community and professional production potters.
Today, the driving force behind the Gold Coast Potters Association are its members and volunteer management committees. In addition to weekly student classes, the Association remains active in the community with staged student and member exhibitions, workshops and events, open days, member demonstrations, social activities and two annual art and craft market days in Autumn and leading up to Christmas.
